| After watching the movie "Death Race"
and the various "Mad Max" films, we were intrigued
with the design of the various vehicles. We had the
inspiration, but what about the vehicle itself? Well
Project Hybrid Theory provided that. The original black
painted Chevy 2500 HD body that was used to make sure the
chassis fit properly was going to be thrown out but was saved,
what for we didn't know. Until now. Watch as we
convert Project Hybrid Theory into a vehicle that can survive in
the harsh Post Apocalyptic environment.
EDIT: Scale4x4RC.org
hosted a build off in which the premise was a "Post
Apocalyptic Zombie World" in the manor of "Resident
Evil" and other such films. Deciding to join in, we
have slightly altered our build to coincide with the build off
on those forums.
Here is Project Hybrid Theory as we left off. The stock
look of the truck will suit this build quite well.

Various thickness
of Evergreen styrene plastic was to create the various pieces of
body armor. These include the front window piece as well
as a rear deck that will protect the rear window and cover the
bed of the truck.

Next
up was the side window armor. We wanted something that was
both zombie resistant and yet allowed ample side window
visibility. While at the grocery store we spotted a
splatter screen that was cheap and had the perfect metal mesh
for strong window netting. The mesh was cut out and glued
to the inside of the side window armor plates. Additional
bars were glued to the outside to increase protection of the occupants
inside.

The
rear tire carrier is built on top of the rear armor deck.
The tires will be stowed on top leaving the plenty of cargo
space below.

A
quick mockup of the overall truck gives of sense of what the
finished vehicle will look like. We can already hear the
zombies shaking in fear of this rig.

In
order to access the spare tires as well as all the gear on top
of the truck, a ladder was necessary. The bottom portion
is angled so that it leans closer to the truck instead of
angling outward. Now accessing the gear and spare tires
will be a lot easier. Hand rails are installed so as to
aide in climbing the ladder which also makes a good place to
grab on to if a quick getaway is needed.

In
the event of encountering a large zombie horde we needed
something that would be able to allow us to plow right through
them. A large cow catcher in the front with angled sides
would help in that. First we took off the original bumper
from Project Hybrid Theory and created a large base for the new
bumper, again out of styrene. The cow catcher was built on
top of this structure. "Machine Gun Joe's" truck
from "Death Race" provided the inspiration for this design. Seeing this
come up is sure to scare those pesky zombies.

Tamiya
spray paints are used to finish the armor plates. Base
color is flat black followed by misting layers of "Gun
Metal" and "Desert Sand" give them a worn and
dirty look. "Desert Sand" is then misted onto
the bottom portion of the truck body itself to blend all the
pieces together. The armor plates are attached to the body
with small screws to make it look as if the parts are literally
bolted to the truck. All that is left at this point is the
details.

The
final details were added including all of the lights. The
weather was perfect so we headed out to take some outdoor shots
of the truck.

Here
you can see the lights in their full brightness. The Axial
Night Vision System provides plenty of spots for all the lights
this rig carries. More lights are planned for the future
but for now, we think it has the zombies scared.
